Uzuki Yuugao woke up. Without opening her eyes, she could tell that she’d been sleeping on hard earthen ground- somewhere unsheltered, judging by the harsh sunlight. She must’ve been more tired than she’d thought, to fall asleep in a cemetery. But when her eyes grew accustomed to the light, she didn’t see Hayate’s gravestone, or any of the familiar surroundings of Konoha. There was definitely no one around the.. park? that she was in. It was impossible to move her without noticing, and this wasn’t a genjutsu, so what had happened? A knot of worry formed just above her stomach.

Standing fluidly, she reached back to make sure her katana was still in place, and adjusted her kunai pouch. It took a second for her to decide to wear her ANBU mask- it’s a part of her uniform, and she might need it, whether she was in enemy territory or not.

It was still fairly early, but Yuugao was sure she could hear the sounds of a market to the right of a bunch of buildings. Taking a few deep breaths, she headed in that direction, where there had to be someone who could tell her what was going on. Her body was tense and ready to evade any surprise ambushes, her left hand constantly hovered above her kunai pouch. However, the few civilians that she passed seemed completely uninterested in her, nor did they react to her uniform.

She had no idea where she was, or how she got here, but she could deal with this. She was one of the best kunoichi in Konoha. All she needed to do was find out where she was, and then the direction that led to home. Easy. Even a genin could do it. Yuugao flexed her fingers and marched right into the market.

There was a faint look of disappointment that was quickly hidden, but was certainly noticeable. It didn't matter anyway, since neither of those was her Hayate.

"I see.. Well, thank you for the information."

"...Is there a reason you wouldn't expect him to be at home?"

She just blinked at him and ran a hand through her hair with a small sigh.

"He was killed."

He stared at her, clearly shocked by that bit of news. "Oh. I... I didn't know, forgive me."

She looked away from him, she'd always assumed he'd be emotionless.

"It can happen to the best of us." Which is what she'd been telling herself over and over. A part of her wondered whether the Hayate and Yuugao he knew were in love but she reminded herself that it didn't matter.

He reached like he intended to touch her, then dropped his hand. "I'm still... I'm so sorry. Are you handling it alright? Is there anything I can do?"

She visibly tensed as he reached out, and when she glanced back- this time finally meeting his eyes- she'd pulled a metaphorical mask on.

"Thank you. I'm fine." Really, there was about as much emotion in that as there was in a kunai.

"I can read you better than that Yuugao... but I will accept that if that is your wish."

It was perturbing to hear him talk to her with such familiarity. "Who exactly was I to you?"

She could be fine, as long as she kept the conversation away from herself, and the past.

"My kohai, and a very overprotective one at that. You tended to fuss that I wasn't eating enough or sleeping enough if I came in too early and left too late. I suspect you also took keeping overzealous prospective girlfriends at bay seriously as well, though I never caught you at it."

Yuugao tried imagining herself as an over-qualified barrier between fangirls and Uchiha Itachi as Hokage. Wow.

"While I still find that really hard to believe, and I think I may be crazy.. Thank you for telling me what you believe is the truth." She intended to find someone else- anyone really- to confirm this, refusing to give up hope that she was stuck here.

His lips quirked wryly. "It's alright if you don't believe me Yuugao-san. I'm used to that after all these months."

She almost felt bad for him.. but it's not really her problem unless the lack of respect drives him on a murderous rampage.

"Ah, right." She quashed the urge to apologise.

He inclined his head to her and let out a soft sigh. "Who would you believe? Kakashi-san is here, as are many in my brother's age group. Minato-sama is here as well."

"Kakashi-senpai is here too?" Her eyes widened in surprise- if he was stuck here too, maybe it really was impossible to escape.

"He is. He's been intel gathering at the surrounding villages for me in the last weeks, but he should be in the village presently."

She frowned. "He works for you? Is he from your..dimension?"

"He isn't. He's from what I tend to call the primary timeline." He waved at the village. "But I am Kage here." His lips quirked dryly. "It was one of the Naruto's ideas to simplify it to that as a show of welcome for all the displaced shinobi. We're still sorting out the Hitai-ate situation."

Well then, she'd look for Kakashi first, and hopefully everything would make more sense afterwards.

"It was that kid's idea? I thought he wanted to be Hokage." Translation: why are you Kage, out of everyone?

"He does. I've been teaching him the way Hiruzen-sama taught me. he'll benefit from it."
