Getting settled

This village was.... interesting. Not in a bad way, exactly, even though it didn't look like home, but this place was better than the last one he'd found himself in. He'd claimed a house a bit up the cliff face, where he could look out over the village, and he was sure eventually he wouldn't be the only inhabitant.

After all, this place seemed as baffling as the last. But, he was sure, he'd still get found by the ones who mattered eventually.

Thus, he settled himself under a tree, back leaned against it, as he nibbled some local dango.

He stayed quiet for a moment before glancing away from her, picking up another stick. "Mm."

She wasn't sure if she could take that reaction as cute, or as a sign that he wasn't about to share the sentiment. Arching an eyebrow, she elbows him sharply. "Mm, what?"

He blinked, leaning away from her elbow a bit. "What?"

"You'll miss me." Pulling the final dango from the stick and shoving it into the side of her mouth, she taps the stick against his cheek. "You know you will."

He stared at her a moment before turning away, bangs hiding his face. "Things are ever changing."

Her brow furrows, and she pulls the stick back, lips edging into a frown. "Well, that's fine. I won't miss you either, then."

"You're here, aren't you?" His voice is soft, and he turned his head slightly. "If you wish distance there is little to be done, mm?"

"I didn't say anything like that--!" She frowns and shifts over so their shoulders aren't touching anymore, flicking her fingers to hurl the dango stick as if it were a senbon to thunk up against a branch overhead. "It's gonna happen eventually, you know. You'll get sent somewhere, maybe home, maybe somewhere else, and you won't have me around anymore. Then you'll realize how much you'll miss me."

His voice was soft as he tips his head back to peer at her stick. "Perhaps in the last several months I've learned to enjoy what I can instead of looking forward to what is going to be lost, mm?"

"Hmph." Hardly placated, she draws a knee into her chest to rest both arms atop it, following his gaze to where the stick's embedded itself deep into the wood. "You know, I get enough cryptic-talk from Neji."

"You're the one making it sound like this is the new tone for any time we have left together." He turned to collect another dango stick, the last, and carefully nibbled it. "Nothing more or less."

[bunsofsteel]

A soft growl of annoyance, then she abruptly leans over to try to bite the the bottom-most ball of dango off the stick, blinking innocently up at him.

He stilled, blinking at her from the now much closer position in silence.

She has to use her tongue to get the ball off completely, but once she does she leans back with a satisfied look to chew it. "We'll just have to see what happens behind unlocked doors then, huh~?"

A hint of a flush touched his cheeks as he looked away from her, deciding not to answer that as he finally resumed finishing off the ball he'd had half bit into.

She snorts quietly through her nose when she catches sight of that blush and shifts just enough to bump their shoulders together again, gazing over the village below. "Well, peaceful as this place looks now, I hope it stays that way."

Well, alright, maybe not completely. That would just be boring.

"Much as I might enjoy that, I have the suspicion it is not to be so. It has the feel of a place slowly waking." He shook his head once, chewing lightly on the stick.

"Hmm..." Unabashedly, she scoots in closer and tilts her head, craning her neck to see the village from his perspective. "Could be. That'd be more interesting that just sitting around here, anyway."

"Haven't you ever heard that wishing an interesting life on someone is considered a curse?" His tone colored with just a little amusement.

[bunsofsteel]

"Well, you go ahead and wish it on me, and I'll wish a peaceful life on you." She gives him another grin before returning her attention below. "Then everyone'll be happy."

The amusement faded into a very solemn expression at her words and he looked away from her back over the village below. "Should such wishes truly be blessings and curses I would gladly take that trade."

She tilts her head and only watches him for a moment before leaning up to just lightly brush her fingers over his temple in a small comfort. "Yeah. I know you would," she says simply before looking back to the village. "So I'll wish that for you."

He closed his eyes and dipped his head just slightly. "Then I wish your your adventure."

Her fingers linger in his hair a moment before she pulls her hand back and rests both arms over her knee again. Her eyes slide closed as she rests her chin forward, nodding once in agreement.

He more sensed the motion than saw it, opening his eyes and looking outward again.
