She didn't know what she had to be upset about. Her children were around her and happy. She had Minato once more. She even had Karin and Mito-baasan and Kakashi and  Obito and Rin. Not to mention the many Uchiha that roamed the village.

So, what was wrong with her? Why was she standing on out in the torrential downpours, letting it plaster her distinctive hair to her body while it covered up the fact that she was crying?

She didn't know. She didn't even want to attempt to find out what was really wrong, because then she'd have to examine some of the things she'd done and said in her lifetime, and she wanted to be happy, not as angst-ridden as Kakashi-kun.

So, the rain was the perfect cover for Uzumaki Kushina to have a little cry.

One of the great laws of the universe - sickness travels faster than word of it. By the time word of Flame Fever reached the Uchiha house, Itachi was already deep in its clutches. It struck overnight. The fever came on strong and fast. The rash burned far more than it itched. The nausea was unrelenting, and the pain severe.

Whoever came in the room the next morning was greeted by the sight of an already sickly man curled up in agony, covered in bright red blisters and drenched in sweat.

Ill Omens

While spring brought celebration, it had also, unfortunately, brought some people from other parts of the country that were better off away. Specifically, some people who, while not sick themselves, as those who had been here already had immunities to this particular illness, were carriers for something dangerous to those who had not caught it as children and had the ability to use chakra.

It started small, a sense of exhaustion, and for those under the age of puberty it only manifested as a fever and a severe rash. For those older, it went further, an acute sense of nausea making eating difficult, and the fever seemed much more aggressive than those of a younger age. It also had an additional final stage that those younger didn't see at all, which was overall muscle weakness that made getting anywhere in the last day of being ill impossible, which was coupled with acute dizzy spells.

It was survivable, though stories of people dying from it weren't unheard of, and the villagers, once they caught wind of it, seemed very intent on getting all the children they could exposed.

The run of the disease, which is called Flame Fever, lasts about five days from visible start to finish in adults, and three in children. It cannot be caught twice.

It can only be caught through contact with the bodily fluids of someone already ill. These include spit, side effects of the rash, and anything else that comes out of a person. It is only contagious for the day before symptoms show, and the period while people have a fever. So if you don't want it, take care, because it is avoidable, though for children not recommended, as the villagers will make more than clear.

This was exactly what went through Madara's head when he felt the fever threatening him. There was only so much he could do to push it back with willpower. He had better things to do than stay in bed!

He'd tried to find something to help against sucha thing, but really, all he remembered from similar situations were.... yeah, well, his mother pampering him, but that was really stupidly rare an occurence! He figured sick children makes everyone stupidly wibbly, and it's worse in mothers. He was grateful for being taken good care of, but... well.. he was on his own now.

Even though his usual clothes his most of his skin, the rashes were vivid, ugly.... and he tried to keep himself from looking in a mirror, or at his hands.
Unable to even bother himself to try and cook one of the simple things he could cook, he settled on drinking some juice while hoping this would just pass.
Except just as he thought that, the fever only seemed to get worse...

She'd been training as much as she could since she arrived. Even if she didn't understand what was going on, she knew that she wasn't going home any time soon. That didn't mean that Hinata could stop training. Oh, no. Despite what Uchiha-san said, Hinata was going to train as much as she could, be a strong girl so that Otou-sama would be proud of her and so Neji-niisan wouldn't hate her.

(She never meant for that to happen! She loved Hizashi-jii-san!)

So, it came as no surprise that she was out running as fast and as far as her tiny feet could carry her. She only stopped when she nearly ran into a woman carrying her sick child and the older boy ended up throwing up on her.

Hinata then slowly walked home, trying not to cry as she realized how disgusting she was and how she'd ruined her clothes with her carelessness. So, now, here she was, a few hundred meters from home, covered in someone else's vomit, and feeling tired and wanting to cry.
