Tenten normally didn't mind coming home; in fact, she was usually the first one there, ready to greet the other two, or to grab Sasuke and go storming off to grab Itachi if the need arose. Tonight, however, she came back later than usual, after dusk. How was she supposed to go back to the way things were, after learning what she had?

Not only the fact that in the future, there would be a war, against an enemy powerful enough to unite the five shinobi nations, but that they'd be losing so badly that Neji...

She'd spent the time after parting from her other two teammates just aimlessly wandering the village, taking stock of all the little things she'd gotten so used to. Daily life, monotonous, peaceful... all of it was hard to reconcile with the idea that back home, eventually, they'd be plunged deep into war.

"I'm home." It was more of a murmur than her customary call as she slipped her shoes off by reflex and made her way through the house. She didn't intend to find any of the others; if she was lucky, she'd be able to head to the kitchen, grab a quick bite to eat, then just head to bed. Or pretend to be asleep, at the very least.

One of the definite advantages to being brought from one place to another meant that with the weird time-skipping-whatever? It was already her birthday, instead of being a few months later.

Fifteen years old... she absently wondered if she could talk to Hokage-sama about holding a Chuunin exams, or putting her through them. Fifteen and still a Genin? Lame!

Either way, she took advantage of the warmer weather and one of the rare hour-or-two-long breaks in the hail to skip down one of the main streets, wearing a new outfit she'd bought for herself in Riku -- a bright red, long-sleeved Chinese-style tunic with gold clasps and a plain pair of black pants. Time to find herself the perfect weapon to serve as her birthday gift to herself... Other than the wooden umbrella she'd made sure to get for her own protection. That barely counted!

[minibuns out on the town! birthday is tomorrow, but throwing the log up now because impatient]

She kind of liked this place, now that she'd found it. The lighting was muted enough to keep the tables relatively private, and there was a counter to sit at instead of just tables! Not to mention, the sushi was great. A little tempted to order saké just because she didn't think the owner would say no, but... well, she'd stopped trying to imitate that facet of Tsunade-sama's when she was still a kid. Besides, she doubted it would be any fun to drink alone. Instead, she got the chef's special, a sushi platter with cider.

Maybe someone would join her, maybe not. Either way, something little like this was kind of relaxing~

Tenten sank to her knees, clutching one of her precious kunai between both hands as her breath came hard through her nose, eyes wide in pure terror. Her heart was pounding as hard as if she'd tried keeping up with Lee during one of his Sprints of Youth, mouth dry as if she hadn't drank anything for days. Every muscle trembled in uneven spasms of exhaustion as she just stared straight ahead, unresponsive to another's touch or voice.

What was that? Who was that? Something cold had drifted through her when she'd headed down a slightly different route into the village from the Uchiha manor, something that had taken hold and coaxed her to climb the highest tree she could find and leap into the air, twirling, somersaulting, feeling as though she were almost flying weightless above the earth until she finally touched down. Even with Chakra, that impact should have shattered her ankles at the very least, though all she did was tuck and roll, emerging a little wet from the snow, but unharmed.

Why had she done that? What had just happened?

And who was that person she could have sworn was guiding her body?

Tenten had never been so cold in all her life. It was mind-boggling, just how much snow there was outside! Some stranger had taken pity on the poor girl and wrapped her in a warm white cloak, because while sleeveless tunics and sandals might have been perfectly fine for the Land of Fire, this was nothing like that at all! Had she been on a mission, and just forgotten about it? Where was the rest of her team? Was this amnesia?! If Neji saw her wandering around like this, he'd make a stupid comment, and Lee would try to reassure her that if she'd only put on a pair of tights like his, then she'd be perfectly warm!

Instead, she ducked into the first brightly-lit shop she saw, shaking snow from her hair. A sweets shop serving tea and dango... maybe someone here would know what was going on, or had seen her teammates somewhere.

Snowed in. Tenten never thought she would ever be in this kind of situation, but it was fun! It was an excuse to stay in and polish her weapons, or try more futile efforts to get Itachi to cook something that tasted good, or even just relax.

They could even spar, as long as their more destructive techniques were kept to a minimum. And sure, they could get out, if they really wanted to, but that just seemed like too much effort. There was food, there wasn't a problem with the water supply... in short, it was just about perfect.

Tenten didn't have so many regrets as she had wishes. Even back in Konoha, she'd always made a point, if she wasn't on a mission during the festivals, to toss a piece of paper into the bonfire each day it was lit. The first night had been a wish for Itachi's health, the second for Sasuke to someday come back to the village, the third to beat that Neji, the fourth that he find happiness, and so on, and so forth.

As happy as she was here, she couldn't quite bring herself to wish that she stay. She cared for both of her Uchiha -- she still blushed to call them lovers -- but it just wasn't the same as spending even an hour with her team. Tonight's wish was to go home and let everything go back to the way it had been.

She offers a silent prayer with closed eyes, then she folds the wish into a paper shuriken like a child and flicks it to the edge of the fire to watch it burn. Though the white silk of her Chinese-style dress is lined with wool, her flesh prickles as she watches the fire consume the little shuriken and the smoke start to rise into the air, then with a sudden cry of surprise she brings both arms up, crossed over her chest in an X to guard as a sharp winter wind makes the flames gutter for a moment.

By the time she looked back, her shuriken had disappeared.

Just because she was in a strange location didn't mean she was about to take a vacation... Especially not after being beaten so thoroughly by that Neji. The thought still was enough to freeze her blood, the slightest threads of panic starting to set in before her lip firms and she gathers her Chakra in her feet, leaping straight up into the air. For today's training, at least, she'd left the scroll leaning against one of the short wooden posts simulating a human body. Instead, a long katana shimmered in the late afternoon sunlight as she twists in midair, flipping over with a harsh kiai to split the log neatly in two, then turn, weaving her way through another weapon's form, twisting and pivoting as she fought enemies only she could see. Sweat dripped from her brow, the twin buns of her hair disheveled as she panted for breath, unwilling or unable to quit as she keeps pushing herself.

First that Sasuke, then Neji. She kept finding herself forced into situations where she couldn't fight at range. If she were ever going to advance, she needed to get past her current level. They were geniuses, but -- well, if Lee had proven anything, it was that hard work really could beat a genius.

The question would be if she could ever get to that point herself.
