Orochimaru moved through the village, humming under his breath as he sorted through the various items that were on sale due to the turn of the season. He had plenty of time, after all, given that nothing at home was in danger of exploding or otherwise being ruined presently, so he could enjoy the fresh air and company of those in the village.

Even if they sadly never had been willing to enjoy his company in turn. It mattered not, he would give them the benefit of the doubt, because doing anything else would have been spitting in the face of both his mother and his sensei's teachings, and he by no means wished to be a disappointment in such a simple way.

Still, most were welcoming to him, and thus there was no point in focusing on those who weren't. It would interfere with his studies, after all, and they were far more relevant than worrying on if a scattering of people knew how to be forgiving.

Itachi awoke with a strange series of memories:

The baby was stillborn. Mikoto survived, but never had another one, so he'd grown up an only child. No, he'd grown up as a prodigious child that helped his clan overthrow the village government when he was only thirteen. Only Uchiha were fit to live. Everyone else deserved to die and there was no room for error. There was only room for power.

Then why... how did he end up in a house that was full of them?!

And more importantly, who was he supposed to kill first?

Naruto was having ramen on the roof of the house, staring forward.

That memory still haunted him... Hadn't it been years since then? He knew it would never leave, and when it happened... he had resolve to grow stronger so something like this would never happen again.

...the fact remained that it did happen. He should have resolved to be stronger sooner... because if he had, Sasuke would still be alive.
Since that day, ramen tasted different.

Alternative Roads

What makes someone the kind of person they are? Is it the people they know? The people they loved? The people who died or didn't die for them, around them? Is that what makes each person who they are, and changes what sort of world someone has found themselves in?

Memories are fickle, delicate things, and sometimes there are those who change what had been a concrete belief through jutsu, seals, hypnosis, or even simple repetition of words that make one forget. In this case, it was a delicate tampering with a seal that someone found in the village, unintentional, unknowing, that sent a ripple across the citizens of the city, and left things very, very different in their wake.

The Seal was one that would fix itself with time, but in the meantime... people's memories were going to be changed, and what would change about the people who housed them in the ripple effect it caused?

What would it be like if someone who you had thought dead suddenly wasn't in your memories? And what if someone who lived had died instead? What would it be like to suddenly remember being an orphan when you'd grown up with parents? What if your teammate hadn't survived that event that you all came away from unscathed? What if you believed you died? What if is the name of the game. Rearrange deaths in the lives of your characters or take them all away so they never lost anyone at all, and see how they change.

The memories will fade back into what is normal for those within the village in days to come... but the memories of those memories will surely linger for a very long time.
