"There must be a leader, Hinata. If something were to happen to my honored father and myself, who would be the strongest voice in opposition to a more distantly-related member of the Main Family becoming heir?"

Neji clasped his hands behind his back and sighed through his nose, a carefully measured sound as he stared straight ahead. This spot, their favored training field, was so far undiscovered by other members of their family. One of the places where they might speak freely without fear of the rest of their clan.

"If it is a group, who is the loudest voice?" A moment as he paused his steps, eyes falling closed for a moment in thought. If they did find the leader to the opposition within the Branch, what would they do? Report it, yes, but then what...?

But when he reopened his eyes, he went still. Before the two Hyuuga was anything but their training ground. In fact, it wasn't Konoha at all. Genjutsu?

Her return to Michi no Sato had been quiet. Just a small date with Naruto, a return to the house, a nice long bath and then the sleep of the dead. It had been.... exactly what she wanted. There was no fuse. No one fawned over her because of her absence. She'd been able to help Itachi-sama gather more materials for the school. And she'd slipped back into her everyday life of working at the clinic in the mornings and going over the papers for Itachi-sama in the afternoons. Besides, she'd also been able to go back to visiting Itachi-san during lunch.

The only thing she regretted was that she really hadn't spent much time with her friends besides Sakura-san. She had missed them while she was gone and hadn't found a chance to visit them since she'd returned home.

Of course she'd heard about the accident with the little girl who managed to knock herself out attempting a technique that was far too advanced for her. How could she not since the child had been rushed to the clinic after fainting just an hour ago?

But now, now she was headed to the house, suddenly suffering from a migraine that had no known cause. It was the sound of someone approaching behind her that made her turn around to check to see if they were friend or foe.

She'd been training as much as she could since she arrived. Even if she didn't understand what was going on, she knew that she wasn't going home any time soon. That didn't mean that Hinata could stop training. Oh, no. Despite what Uchiha-san said, Hinata was going to train as much as she could, be a strong girl so that Otou-sama would be proud of her and so Neji-niisan wouldn't hate her.

(She never meant for that to happen! She loved Hizashi-jii-san!)

So, it came as no surprise that she was out running as fast and as far as her tiny feet could carry her. She only stopped when she nearly ran into a woman carrying her sick child and the older boy ended up throwing up on her.

Hinata then slowly walked home, trying not to cry as she realized how disgusting she was and how she'd ruined her clothes with her carelessness. So, now, here she was, a few hundred meters from home, covered in someone else's vomit, and feeling tired and wanting to cry.

She had to prove to Otou-sama that she was a good girl. She wanted to make him proud to have her as his daughter. So, she was training hard every day. Right at that point, she was running around the Hyuuga complex to prove herself.

But, there was a beautiful butterfly that she had never seen before and she stopped to admire it. It moved away from the flowers by the compound's gates and she snuck close to watch it. However, when she was over the threshold, she wasn't anywhere near the butterfly or the street that went before the Hyuuga grounds.

Instead, she was staring at a patch of grass and trees that was foreign to her little eyes. Hinata looked around for her father, her aunt, any member of either side of the clan, but all the people she saw were strangers and none were paying attention to her. She bit at her bottom lip to keep from crying out, but she was terrified. Where was Otou-sama? Hizashi-jii-san? Anyone?

She was tired of dealing with Kakashi-sensei. Sure, he had been a great teacher to her, Naruto-kun and Sasuke-chan, but over the last three years, Hinata had been forced to deal with him pretty much non-stop since the other two members of Team 7 had gone off with Jiraiya-sama after the Akatsuki threat.

And she'd spent more time with Neji-niisan and Lee-san and Tenten-san, but it sucked that she had to pretty much give up on Naruto-kun to that...that...that...girl. She really hadn't had much choice, had she?

And now her father was talking about which of the other men would be an acceptable partner once she took over as clan head? And he was recommending Inuzuka Kiba-kun? As if she couldn't do better than that dog-breath boy? No.

So, when she'd gone out to train to blow off steam and found herself not in her clan's complex but in some strange, chilly village, she was pretty sure that her day had gone from bad to worse.

She had noticed the villagers running around preparing things for the past few days. Every time she attempted to speak to one of them about what was going on, however, they seemed to be too busy to answer her questions. Finally, she'd braved asking Kakashi-sensei's landlady—the owner of the bookstore—and was informed about the festival to honour the dead.

Hinata had quite a few dead to honour, here or not, and she purchased her own candles and some ingredients to make dishes to put before the shrine. It would be awkward since she didn't have any photographs of her mother and putting one of her cousin would seem a bit morbid, but she hoped that they would appreciate the thought anyway.

That was what counted, right?

Perhaps she wasn't the only one of the shinobi intent on doing so as well.

Since the trip to Riku no Sato with Naruto-kun and Kakashi-sensei, Hinata had been spending all of her free time in the dojo at Mikoto-san's house. When she wasn't there, she was visiting with Uchiha Itachi-san for about thirty minutes a day. Her last few mornings, she spent with the assistants at Sakura-san's clinic, while she dedicated her afternoons to helping out Itachi-sama still.

The gifts she'd gotten for Neji-nii-san and Tenten-san still sat up in her room, but she'd been avoiding them for a bit since her return. In fact, she hadn't even seen Naruto-kun that much.

She needed to be stronger and better before she could relax again.

She had left early in the morning for a jog before she started her training. Her routine since coming to Michi no Sato had been rarely broken. She woke up early, jogged around the village, trained for two hours—either by herself or with Neji-nii-san, and Naruto-kun later—before she went and did odd jobs for the villagers to earn some ryo.

When she reached the village proper, she noticed many slips of coloured paper on the ground. She stopped, trying to figure out where they'd come from. Surely if there had been some sort of celebration, she would have found out about it long before now, yes? She bent over to pick up the once closest to her, a lovely shade of orange that reminded her of Naruto-kun's jacket....

When the skies stayed dark before glowing blood red for a few hours and going black again, Hinata hadn't really thought much of it, but after three days and nights of this bizarre (and warm) weather, she was starting to get antsy.

She hadn't brought up her discomfort with any of those around her. Instead, she'd thrown herself in to training and trying to get to know the other members of the house.

Today, however, was the fourth day of this and she just couldn't take it. If something didn't happen, she would.... She wasn't entirely sure about what she would do, but it wouldn't be to just sit around, waiting.

Naruto-kun had been in Michi no Sato for a few days now, and while after their first talk they'd shared many more, it still felt awkward and painful to be around him.

No matter that he'd said, and she understood, that he needed time to adjust to being away from the fighting and other things that had occurred back home, her heart was still heavy.

She didn't know how to talk to anyone about it. Would it be proper? Who would understand? Could she do it?

Lost in thought, she sat down in the dojo of Mikoto-san's house with the intent to meditate and clear her head, but it wasn't really working after an hour.

One moment, she was fighting, watching her beloved cousin fulfilling his duty, as he'd always seen it, to protect her in battle. And the next? Well, she was somewhere she'd never imagined she would be.

Was this some form of genjutsu that she'd somehow been subjected to? She didn't think that anyone around her at the time was capable of such a feat, especially since leaving her with Neji would have been crueler and more demoralising. She activated her Byakugan, but all she could see were people going about the day-to-day business of a peaceful life.

But it was oddly familiar, if she continued to look around her.

It was as if Konoha had been dipped in ice and left for someone to take a picture of. And no matter how picturesque it was, Hinata knew she needed to find her cousin, to make sure he was okay. She...needed to stop kneeling in the snow and ice and find out how she'd gotten here.

Standing up, she dusted her knees off, making a slight grimace at the wetness and cold that seeped through her clothes. Now, where would she find someone who could tell her about Neji-nii-san?

This was a strange place she supposed, but there had been other things happening to her and it’s not as if she was as surprised or startled as she should have been, Hinata really had to congratulate herself a bit for not freaking out and remaining calm about this, it hit her then that maybe she had maturated more lately and she wasn’t sure how to feel about that, on whether she should be happy or nostalgic.

Fancy cut because yes! )
